Forex Market Hours

Many traders prefer the Forex Market as it operates 24×5.  With the Tokyo Session Open on Sunday in many parts of the world to the US Close on Friday.

There are three major sessions you need to be aware of. These are all in GMT time. You’ll want to use your Windows clock to display a second time zone or figure out the timezone offset from yours. I’m in Vancouver for example and right now we’re -8 hours from GMT time. That is, GMT is 8 hours ahead. It’s Winter. In Summer we’re 7 hours behind. Daylight savings time can make calculating GMT confusing but once you’ve gotten the hang of it you live and breath GMT.  All times in 24 hour clock.

  • Asian Session – from 0:00 GMT to 9:00 GMT
  • London Session – from 8:00 GMT to 17:00 GMT
  • US Session - from 12:00 GMT to 21:00 GMT

There are two more, minor sessions, the Australian and European Markets.

Note that the Asian and London Sessions as well as the London and US session overlap.  The US and Asian Session do not overlap, you’ll find some pretty quiet times between US close and Tokyo open.

Some Forex Traders will trade the open and closing times, others avoid it, or look for a direction.  Using Pivot Points and watching the first few minutes or hour of a session open can also be profitable.
